NGCP appeals for public support against pilferage

DAGUPAN CITY – The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) appealed for public support in the prevention of pilferage of transmission line hardware and materials in order to sustain the reliability and stability of the power grid.

“We are requesting the host communities of our substations to guard and protect the transmission line facilities against thieves” said Engr. Jose Arellano, head of the NGCP North Luzon Operations and Maintenance Division.

In a press conference held in this city recently, Arellano said that pilferage of transmission line assets can trigger substandard delivery of service which will have adverse effects to residents and businesses that are dependent on NGCP’s power delivery.

NGCP is the private company operating the country's transmission lines, which deliver electricity from power plants to distribution utilities and electric cooperatives. Since these transmission facilities are made of metal, they can be sold to junk shops.

According to NGCP, stealing of electric materials is punishable under Republic Act 7832 or the “Anti-Electricity and Electric Transmission Lines/Materials Pilferage Act of 1994.”

RA 7832 prohibits the possession, control, or custody of electric power transmission line/material by any person not engaged in the transmission or distribution of electric power, or in the manufacture of such electric power transmission line/material.

Violators face 12 to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from P50,000 to P100,000. (VHS/AMM/PIA-1, Pangasinan
