Boquig school wins national eco-friendly school awards

DAGUPAN CITY – Mayor Belen T. Fernandez lauded  the Bonuan Boquig Elementary School for winning three national and regional awards in the search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly School on November 23 at Fisher Mall, Quezon City  for its innovative and unique “Gulayan sa Paaralan” projects.

The school received  the Nestle Water Leadership Award, Meralco Energy Leadership Award and Land Bank of the Philippines’ Greening Leadership Award and was ranked third overall nationwide.

Previously,  school was a grand slam winner in the regional search level and won three special awards for the school’s greening and gardening practices that had won several awards.

For winning this year's   awards, the school was given a cash prize of P80,000 and trophies for its three awards bringing  its total purse to P125,000 including their prizes in the region.

Manuel Ferrer, school principal, said the honor bestowed on the school was the result of the collaboration and concerted efforts of the students, teachers, parent-teachers association (PTA) and the barangay council.

This was the first time that the school garnered all the three awards which was  very surprising because  in this tilt, it is difficult to qualify even in one category.

'Gulayan sa Paaralan' is in line with the “Pagsasarili Program” of Mayor Fernandez which encourages children in schools to take part in attaining sustainability and food security in the community through school gardening by using new technologies like aquaponics and hydroponics.
