Dagupan revives traffic lights

DAGUPAN CITY – The city’s traffic lights on Angel B. Fernandez Avenue corner Arellano Street and Marcelo H. Del Pilar Street,  along with its pedestrian lantern, have been restored in order to guide motorists and pedestrians to safety.
The new traffic lights went on trial run on October 27.
The stop lights intend to lessen or ease the flow of traffic in one of the city’s major intersections and prevent road accidents.
The restoration of the city’s stop lights forms part of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez’ thrust in improving the traffic management system of the city, a move which she started since she became the city mayor.
The City Engineering Office under Engineer Virginia V. Rosario disclosed that four more of the city’s major intersections will be installed with upgraded stop lights.
These major intersections are located at Angel B. Fernandez Avenue corner Rizal Street, Perez Boulevard corner Guilig, Perez Boulevard corner Rizal Street and Rizal Extension, and Perez Boulevard corner Marcelo H. Del Pilar Street.
All in all, the city will install 36 sets of traffic signal lanterns and 26 sets of pedestrian lanterns with LED bulbs, all with a total cost of P8,594,560.
The citizenry reacted positively to the restoration of the city’s stop lights which, it can be recalled, started operating in December 2001, during the term of then Mayor Alipio F. Fernandez Jr., until they ceased operations.
Fernandez encouraged pedestrians to use the pedestrian lanes and for the drivers to follow the loading and unloading zones, and other traffic laws like the no parking areas, no waiting, no u-turn and no counter flow. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
