DAGUPAN CITY – A flowering plant called ‘Rosal’ was formally adopted as the city’s official flower per an ordinance approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) on Tuesday.
Approved on second and third reading was Draft Ordinance No. 0-585, otherwise known as “An Ordinance Recognizing Rosal as the Official Flower of the City of Dagupan”. The ordinance was authored by Councilor Jeslito C. Seen, chairman of the SP's Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee.
As the city’s official flower, “Rosal” will be formally introduced to the public during the city’s Fiesta celebration in December.
Seen also took note that “Rosal” has medicinal value, aside from its pristine beauty.
“We have actually appropriated P50,000 for the propagation of this flower where seedlings will be distributed to households in all the 31 barangays, and because of its medicinal value, we can make use of this as an added revenue and livelihood for our constituents,” said Seen.
“Rosal”, described as a distinctive white flower, has been recognized as the official flower of Dagupan ever since. This can be found in the book “Symbols of the State Republic of the Philippines” as reported by Dagupan City History Culture and Arts (DCHCA) chairman Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque.
Duque proposed that ‘Rosal’ be used during official functions of the city government as an ornament especially when in-season.
Seen said that Rosal can be seen in Pogo Grande where there is an abundance of this flowering plant. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO/Sept. 20, 2016)
