Pangasinense PWDs get support devices

Lingayen – Persons With Disability (PWD) sector in Pangasinan gets support anew with the awarding of prosthetic devices to some PWDs courtesy of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) in partnership with the Province of Pangasinan through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) on August 13, here.

Local social welfare officer Emil Samson said that prior to the awarding rites, an assessment to the beneficiaries was conducted by the PBF Prosthetics and Brace Center, a Non-Government Organization (NGO) of the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan which manufactures the artificial devices.

Prosthesis is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part which may be lost because of trauma, disease or congenital conditions.

Recipients of the prosthesis were: Noly Tabucol (Bolinao), Orlando Mapili (Bolinao), Elymar Ramos (Lingayen), Ronnie dela Cruz (Lingayen) and Roger de Guzman (Mangatarem). John Vincent Castro, on the other hand, received a wheel chair.

Along with the awarding of support devices to PWDs which included their fitting and gait-training, several PWDs from various parts of Pangasinan underwent the assessment needed for the availment of prosthesis.

The awarding of Php175, 000-worth prostheses and wheel chair forms part of the incumbent provincial administration’s commitment for the promotion and protection, and equal serving of human rights and freedom for Pangasinan PWDs.

Various programs were implemented and being maintained by the incumbent provincial administration to escalate the self-esteem and capabilities of Pangasinense PWDs as partners for the over-all development of Pangasinan, PSWDO Samson said.

Pangasinense PWDs were also formed into municipal and city – based associations and a provincial federation for them to have better representations who will amplify matters concerning them, he added.

It can be recalled that the Pangasinan Federation of Persons With Disabilities (PFPWD) romped off with 22 medals to capture the over-all championship of the 4thstage of Philippine Sports for the Differently Abled (PHILSPADA) Paralympics National Games – Luzon Leg held on June 30 to July 6 at Rizal Sports Complex in Manila and ULTRA in Pasig City.

The PWD group of Team Pangasinan -- that is fully-supported by the provincial government -- collected 9 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals in PHILSPADA, a sports development program for PWDs initiated by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
